Agencies Pile Up Unnecessary Printing Costs – $930 Million
Encouraging federal employees to hit “print” less could save taxpayers $930 million.
A report finds that federal agencies – excluding the Department of Defense (DOD) – spend nearly $1.3 billion a year on office printing. Of these printing costs, the study identifies $440.4 million a year – 34 percent – spent on unnecessary printing. These figures do not include the funds agencies spend to publish various documents for public consumption, but rather the estimated annual printing expenditures based on the average federal civilian employee.

CAGW – Porker Of The Month For September
Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) named Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) its September Porker of the Month for suggesting that the United States Postal Service (USPS) could solve its financial problems by embarking on a new ad campaign.
This part of the story disgusts me!
The USPS has 600,000 employees and is the second-largest employer in America behind Wal-Mart. The USPS Office of Inspector General reported that employees were paid $21.9 million for 875,540 hours of “stand-by” time in FY 2010, and $4.3 million for 170,666 hours in the first half of FY 2011. The USPS also has a 24 percent vacancy rate in its 284 million square feet of interior office space.
Please check out the whole article and other entries on the CAGW site. They do great work and should be visited often.

Zombie Budget: Payments to the Deceased
September 29, 2011

Wastewatcher
Halloween is around the corner, which means that in the coming weeks it will be more important than ever to be on the lookout for signs of the zombie apocalypse. Should those signs start to appear, any possible advantage for the living over the undead will be of the utmost importance. Tragically, the zombies have a head start in gathering resources for any impending battle, and their chief financial backer appears to be the federal government. Because when it comes to giving money to dead people, the government is in a class of its own, and while it might be tempting to forgive the feds for their confusion – the latest rash of imbursements for the dead involves federal employees, who are sometimes difficult to distinguish from zombies – taxpayers surely deserve better.
On September 14, 2011, Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Inspector General Patrick E. McFarland released a scathing report on the federal government’s Civil Service Retirement and Disability Fund (CSRDF). Since 2006, the CSRDF, which sends retirement and disability checks to qualified former federal employees, has handed out an average $120 million annually to dead people, and the problem is getting worse.

I have been following information like this report provided by Coburn for a long time. Everything from the Pig Book, blogs, news stories, and just random information I have come across the web and I have to say, I am EXTREMELY DISGUSTED! I have read and watched stories on this kind of waste for quite sometime but in this economy it disgusts me more everyday. From federal, state and corporate levels all this money going to waste while many are struggling to just get by day to day. I’m outraged and so posting this information to make others aware may make a difference but then again it might not. Either way I begin the campaign here. Just so you know I hold no political affiliation specifically and I am no saint. However, I am not wasting millions of tax payers dollars nor am I wasting millions of corporate dollars. I just think that people should be aware of the reports and information that is out there.
I have attached a link with a disturbing list. Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) compiled a list of what he deemed as the biggest wastes of taxpayer money in 2010.
The kind of wasteful spending outlined in this report disgusts me. Doesn’t matter whether what political party you belong to this should piss you off.
